20cm x 20cm filter pads made for 20x20 plate filters. Pads rated .4 to .6 micron remove 99.998% of bacteria. This is considered sterile filtration. We do offer one pad with a tighter degree of filtration (WE924). The reason many wineries and breweries choose this pad is that the flow rate through the pad is much higher. Ultimately it is choice between a higher degree of sterility and how fast the filtration will take. Using these .4 to .6 (WE923) pads versus the .3 to .5 (WE924) will be approximately 33% faster. Any flavor difference between the finished products would be undetectable.
Please note that all pad filters are rated 'nominal', meaning that there is a range of material from small to large that is filtered out. An average rating (listed by many manufacturers) for this pad would be approximately .5 microns. The pads will filter out some material down to .4 micron and will also allow some material up to .6 micron to pass through the filtering system, thus the .4 to.6 rating.
The filters can be sterilized by in-line steam, auto-claving, dry heat, hot water or chemical methods. We choose to run Saniclean (CL27) solution through the pads followed by sterile water or a small amount of wine that is then discarded. After the solution is run through the pads, and the pads have softened, the filter will need to be re-tightened.
Each pad has an exit side (indicated by stamped-in mfg product number) and an entry side. Wine should enter the pads on the entry side and leave on the exit side. A closer examination of your filter will show you how wine enters and exits the plates and how to determine the directions the pads should go.
On the 20x20 filters we sell, the pads should be placed in the filter in an alternating pattern that starts with the exit side (stamped in product number) facing away from the pump. The next pad should be placed with the exit side (stamped in product number) facing the pump. The pad direction will then alternate thereafter.
